Current Campaign
In 2020 we began working with the City of San Luis Obispo to include enclosed dog parks as one of the City's supported recreational uses. Over this time, our group has successfully helped elevate dog parks as a top-priority City recreational use. The City has embraced our vision with the recent construction of the Laguna Lake Dog Park and inclusion of a dog park at the new Righetti Ranch Park. As City funding is currently unavailable for the Righetti Ranch dog park, Friends is working with the City to build a dog park with outside help sooner than the projected 10-year timeframe with city funding.
Friends intends to build and maintain this park. We will need to raise about $100,000 to make this happen. We hope our memorial wall/windbreak project at Laguna Lake Dog Park will be a good start to raise some of these funds, but much more will be needed. We also intend on offering recognition of Righetti Dog Park elements (e.g., trees, benches, etc.) as another fundraising avenue.
Friends previous fundraisers and donations has resulted in the building and donating agility equipment for the Laguna Lake Dog Park. Friends partnered with Pacific Beach High School shop classes to help build this equipment. They are also helping to build the memorial walls/windbreaks.
Our Mission
Friends of San Luis Obispo City Dog Parks, or SLOCITYDOGS, is a member of a non-profit (501c3) dog park group (Central Coast Dog Park Alliance) and is working with the City of San Luis Obispo, and other interested parties, to create and maintain safe, clean, off-leash enclosed dog parks within the City of San Luis Obispo. Such facilities will promote social and recreational opportunities for the citizens of the City San Luis Obispo and their canine companions.
Our Goals
SLOCITYDOGS will strive to promote and provide educational programs that support responsible dog ownership and dog park etiquette. Our primary goal is to work with the City to establish and maintain fenced dog parks throughout the City of San Luis Obispo. As dog parks will compete with other City recreational needs with limited City funds, we will: pursue fundraising and other financial opportunities to help offset dog park improvement costs to enhance the dog park experience; and we will work with the City to establish a volunteer group to help in the maintenance of the dog parks, once they are built.
John McKenzie
President
Given the City has over 13,000 dogs (2020 estimate), SLOCITYDOGS was created to promote fenced dog parks within the City Limits. Given that the City has limited funds available to support all of the competing recreational demands, outside funding and support will accelerate the development of dog parks, which is the primary purpose of SLOCITYDOGS. Further, by providing volunteers, park costs can be reduced, as well as will help keep parks in good working order to enhance the dog park experience.
